So I recently arrived home in good ol' Dublin, Ohio. Now I suddenly have more desk space and for the first time I get to use my 20" desktop monitor as a main monitor. To accommodate this I set out to find a keyboard to match my macbook pro. This will allow me to use the secondary monitor as my main screen and I can now face it instead of being forced to have my body facing my laptop but looking at the display next to it.

With a budget of around $40 or so I set off to best buy to find something decent. However everything at best buy seemed to be upwards of $50 and most had a mouse thrown in the box that I did not need and not want to pay for. However, my next stop at microcenter was a bit more fruitful. I found a nice logitech keyboard, and while not having an apple layout(switched alt and windows key) I thought I would be able to work around it.

However, it seems that everything was not fine with a windows keyboard on os x. There is a built in preference setting for switching the windows and alt key in the preferences. Unfortunately the built in keyboard in the laptop is not controlled independently of the external keyboard. This also meant that the custom keyboard mappings I had set for various programs were messed up by switching the modifier keys. These applications apparently ignores the remapping of the keys via system preferences and continues to use the default ones. Which meant that I would get none of my custom controls mapped through quicksilver or usb overdrive. After attempting to find a solution and giving up after an hour or so I figured it was time to return my new toy in search of an apple native one.

If I wanted to go the easy way I could have just gotten the standard apple keyboard but I don't like the feel of it. The keys have to far to travel and it is too soft. Also the tilted up is uncomfortable after a while. A few internet searches turned up few mac keyboards but I did find one that seemed to fit the bill. And as a bonus it uses the same key system as my macbook pro(which I like).

After purchasing said keyboard, I find I like it but it is going to take me a while to get use to a full size keyboard after using a laptop for a year and half now.

God. Whenever I come back to staccpack, it's like Easter, but with no candy.

"Jobe's alive!? When did that happen? Are you sure? I saw him getting stabbed and tossed into a cave? And in only three days? wow."

Thats not a bad keyboard. A lot of the computers at school seem to use these. It wouldn't be my first choice as I am use to the short key travel of my laptop and my icekey keyboard. All in all though, it seems pretty solid. But how will you get along without your divorak keyboard?
